This site is dedicated to promoting a holistic, integrative understanding of human flourishing and especially the role and contribution of physical flourishing in the achievement of that goal.
The term ‘flourishing’ invokes an evocative and inspirational metaphor from botany that captures important elements of the essence of what is meant when we talk about optimum positive human wellness.
Considerable progress has been made (on some fronts) of late, in advancing an explanation of what human flourishing might be. This has happened in large measure as a result of work done by the positive psychology movement and also from new and groundbreaking strands of inquiry emerging within sociology and indeed also in economics. As a result the terms, psychological flourishing and social flourishing are now encountered frequently in the respective literatures on well-being.
Up to now much less has emerged on this subject from within the biological science tradition and the phrase physical flourishing, in a human health context, is virtually unused in the lexicon. This site will aspire to address this deficit in some measure.
The principle goals of this endeavor will have as focal points:
a. the potential role of physical activity, exercise and fitness as key components within the physical flourishing concept and,
b. the significance of physical flourishing as an integrated component of overall human flourishing.
The informational content of the site will be expanded progressively over time. You too can have a role in building this enterprise. We hope the site in time will become a collaborative effort among a growing community of interested researchers and practitioners who believe in the potential for well-being enhancement through physical activity, exercise and physical fitness.
